U14B, Level 2 Case Study
Oct 16, 2022 6:00 PM (EST) - 8:00 PM (EST)
Details: This session will present a full U14B game from 2010 from the perspective of one of the game's on-ice officials. This session is appropriate for any Level 1 or Level 2 Officials or Community Evaluators interested in developing their skills. This session will allow us (as a group) to evaluate all kinds of calls: good ones (that fit this level of game), missed ones, and ones that don't fit. We'll also have the opportunity to evaluate positioning choices, mechanics, etc. Presenters Paul Shipman and Lauren Koster will present this session, allowing participants to reflect on video footage while providing tips and clarification for calls, decision-making, and more.

About Paul: Paul Shipman wears many hats, including his helmet (which sometimes sports a camera). Beginning as a new-to-skating On-ice Official in 2004, Paul has engaged in his local officiating (and Ringette) community. He became Referee-in-chief of the Winnipeg Ringette League in 2006, a Community Evaluator in 2009, Instructor and Ringette Manitoba's Director of Officiating in 2015, Regional Evaluator in 2016, Master Instructor in 2017, Westerns Supervisor in 2018, 2019 & 2022, Provincial Evaluator in 2019, and CRCs Supervisor in 2022. He has also served as Vice-President and President of the Winnipeg Ringette League, Chair of the Western Canadian Ringette Championships in 2014, and Co-Chair of the Canadian Ringette Championships in 2018.
In 2010 Paul began a project filming games with a helmet camera. This work was done with Ringette Manitoba's blessing and culminated in the training videos: "Understanding Body Contact," "Anatomy of Tripping," and "Anatomy of Hooking." These videos can be found today on Ringette Canada's Youtube channel
About Lauren: Lauren Koster became an on-ice official in 1998 and today is the Officials Development Coordinator for Ringette Alberta. She began instructing new officials in 2013 and became a Regional Evaluator in 2016. She attended Westerns in 2015 and 2018 as a member of the officiating team.
Lauren is not just an official but also a player and coach. She has coached teams to the podium at both Westerns and CRCs. This season she will be coaching some of our youngest players at U10 while still playing at Open and officiating in her "free time."

Details: This session will focus on the tough on-ice calls that we are called upon to make during the course of a ringette game. Details: We invite officials to participate in this session catered specifically to improving their conflict management skills and diffusing the variety of situations they may encounter as an official. In this session, Amy will discuss specific strategies and tactics officials can implement to promote healthy management of difficult situations.

About Amy: Amy has been officiating ringette for 22 years and is a level 5 official. She has participated at 8 Canadian Ringette Championships, the 2013 U19 World Ringette Championships, the 2015 Canada Winter Games, the 2015 and 2019 World Ringette Championships and has enjoyed her time as Officiating Development Chair for Ringette Ontario. Further to this, Amy is a Former National Panel Referee with Rugby Canada as well as a Teacher and mom of 2. Amy is excited to bring her experiences from across sport and her personal life to this session to help fellow officials manage conflict that they may encounter.

Details: We invite officials to participate in this session catered specifically to improving their officiating and progressing to “the next level”. In this session, Karen & Amy will speak to their personal experiences as officials and relay strategies officials can implement to improve on one’s own officiating and advance towards individual goals.

About Karen: Karen Meek started officiating at the age of 12 and has enjoyed both playing and officiating at a competitive level. Once she started to focus more on officiating, she found herself moving through the various levels. She has maintained her Level 5 since 2004 and has officiated at Regional Championships, Provincial Championships, Canadian Ringette Championships, Canada Winter Games and the World Ringette Championships. As much as she enjoyed playing with team mates, she is still very much part of a team and excited to bring her perspective to this session.

About Robert: Robert Drury has been an official, evaluator & Master Instructor for many years. He has had the opportunity to officiate at World Championships, Canada Winter Games, Canadian Ringette Championships as well as many Provincial events. Robert has also been the editor of Ringette Canada’s rule book since 2009. He loves being on the ice and the speed of the game, but also values the opportunity to provide feedback and help develop other officials as well. Away from the arena, he is a Director of Operations for a fundraising company and a father of 5 kids.
About Iris: Iris has been officiating for over 40 years including 9 years at CRC’s, at the Canada Winter Game and supervising officials at CRC for 19 years and at CWG for 3 years. Further to this, Iris has enjoyed her time working as Ringette Canada Director of Officials for 4 years, as a Ringette Canada Officiating Committee Member for 8 years, and as Clinic Instructor and Ringette Canada Master Instructor for many years. Iris is excited to bring her experience from many different aspects of officiating to this session

About Carl: Dr. Carl Nienhuis is a Mental Performance Consultant (MPC) and Assistant Professor at UFV based out of Chilliwack, B.C. Carl provides mental skills training and support by working with athletes, coaches and other sport science professionals, actively consulting and counselling numerous athletes and performers across a wide-range of disciplines and competitive levels. Carl's performance coaching philosophy is built on seeking to experience meaning through appreciating and responding to others and to the demands of the moment. Aside from a few years spent in Ottawa completing his graduate studies in sport psychology, Carl has spent the majority of his life nestled in BC's beautiful Fraser Valley.
